Carys Davies’ lauded first novel West saw widowed American settler Cy Bellman set out to roam the uncharted wilderness beyond the Mississippi River in search of rumoured ancient bones of monsters. She returns with The Mission House, a riveting tale of human connection set in contemporary South India. In a moment of mid-life clarity, the 1950s heroine of Rachel Joyce’s new novel, Miss Benson’s Beetle, abandons her dead-end job and advertises for an assistant who will accompany her to the other side of the world in search of a beetle that may or may not exist. With Caroline Sanderson, the authors discuss their shared themes of adventure, longing and unlikely friendships that defy boundaries and odds. Rachel Joyce will now join this panel digitally.
