One of the most celebrated of the new generation of Japanese writers, Sayaka Murata has won not only the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, but the Gunzo, Noma, and Mishima Yukio Prizes, been named a Freeman’s ‘Future of New Writing’ author, a Vogue Japan Woman of the Year and her novel Convenience Store Woman (trans. Ginny Tapley Takemori) became a global sensation. She returns with Earthlings (trans. Takemori), a strange and charming tale of a young woman who is convinced she is an alien and a powerful exploration of finding freedom from familial and societal expectations. In this special conversation she speaks with The New York Times Tokyo bureau chief Motoko Rich from her home in Tokyo and gives an insight into her literary life in the city.
